String the Straws

My almost 3 yr old loves jewellery. She enjoys wearing her beaded necklaces & bracelets. So when i asked her if she wants to make her own necklace & bracelet, she got all excited. This is a great activity for fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, concentration & can be done by kids with little or no help depending on their age. I would suggest trying it with kids ages 2.5 & up. Older kids can use this activity to practice their patterning skills. You could also add beads to these.👍

What you need

  • Coloured Plastic Straws
  • Scissors
  • Elastic Thread
  • Pipecleaner

How to

  • Cut the plastic straws into small pieces. Make sure to add a variety of colors.

  • Make a knot on end of the string/pipecleaner, so that the straws stay in place.

  • Let your kids push the straws into the string/pipecleaner.

For beginners i would suggest using the pipecleaner first. Then you could introduce the string for more challenge. My LO found it easy to push the straws through the pipecleaners, although she needed some help with the string.

Want to make jewellery out of this.. Simple!

Once the string is full, make a knot and you’ve got a pretty necklace. If you’ve used pipecleaner twist the edges and slide a straw over the joint & you have a lovely bracelet. My LO was so happy when i let her wear it for a while. (please supervise your kids if they are wearing these)

While doing this activity, we talked about the different colors and her favourite picks. She even told me she wants to make one for her friend Hannah.😀

You could set this activity for kids party or playdates too.. This could also be a cool busy bag activity. In fact its one of our favourites now👍

Hi!! Im Lavanya, stay at home mom of 3 & 2 yr old girls.. My LOs are very active and they need various activities to keep them busy and interested. A monotonous play bores them easily.. Hence, I've started to explore & create activities to keep them occupied - fun & some learning.. This blog is my maiden attempt where you can find simple crafts and learning activities for kids. If you like my page share it with your friends. Also tell me what you think in the comments. 😀 Thanks for stopping by!!
