Clip the Dots – Fine Motor Math Activity

This is a simple math activity for toddlers & preschoolers. Perfect for busy bags. It helps develop fine motor skills, number recognition, one to one correspondence.

What you need

  • Jumbo Craftsticks
  • Clothespin
  • Permanent Marker

How to

  • Write the number and mark the corresponding dots on your craftsticks using permanent markers. You could also use do a dot markers or dot stickers.
  • Let your kids clip the clothespin on the corresponding dots.
  • Let them count the dots and say the corresponding number as they do it.

After they have completed the activity- they can compare the number of clothespin in each stick. You can introduce the concept of greater than and lesser than. If you are taking your busy bag outside and dont want to carry all the 15 clothespin, you could just carry 5. Kids can work on one stick at a time. You could also use pom poms or buttons instead of the clothespin.

I showed Miss A(almost 3yrs) how to do it on one stick & she took it from there. After she clipped the clothespin on the dots, we counted the number of dots on each stick. Its a great way to learn numbers & counting. Miss D(22 months) tried to do it, am pretty sure she understood the concept, but she couldn’t handle the clothespin. Somehow she ended up breaking them everytime 😂
