How to Color Rice – For Kids Play

Colored rice can be used in various kids activities – arts, crafts, sensory bins… You could also use them for home decor – layer them in a clear glass and display. Coloring rice is real easy & simple and can be done within minutes.

What you need

  • Inexpensive Rice
  • Ziploc Bags (optional)
  • Vinegar
  • Food Color

How to

  • Pour 1 cup of rice in a ziploc bag. Add any 1/2 tsp of vinegar & food color to it. You could also use empty yoghurt tubs or just any plastic container.
  • Close the ziploc bag. Mix the contents well. If using plastic container, mix the contents using a spoon.
  • Pour the rice onto a plate. Let it dry. You could sun dry it (speeds up drying) but i used small quantities of rice – so just let it air dry overnight on my kitchen countertop.
  • Colorful Rice is ready for your play activities.

You could also color rice using rubbing alcohol instead of vinegar. Store the dried rice in an airtight container and it stays good indefinetly 😀
